He was one of the legendary seven Mercury astronauts and flew into orbit on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_9\">last and longest<\/a> Mercury mission in 1963. Cooper also commanded the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gemini_5\">Gemini 5<\/a> mission in 1965 and was backup commander for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_10\">Apollo 10<\/a>.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know whether Cooper witnessed the X Prize victory of SpaceShipOne before he died, but I hope so. With his passing, only three of the Mercury Seven remain alive: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Glenn\">John Glenn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Carpenter\">Scott Carpenter<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wally_Schirra\">Wally Schirra<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gus_Grissom\">Gus Grissom<\/a> was killed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_1\">Apollo 1<\/a> fire in 1967. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deke_Slayton\">Deke Slayton<\/a> died of brain cancer in 1993, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\">Alan Shepard<\/a> succumbed to leukemia in 1998.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colonel Gordon Cooper died yesterday at age 77.
